Rio Tinto Dampier Salt tour – 17th June 2024
Today some of the PHCCI team were treated to Rio Tinto Dampier Salt tour hosted by Jacinta Barnett , Manger of Operations in Port Hedland.
Dampier Salt in Western Australia is the world’s largest exporter of solar salt, salt being produced by from evaporating sea water. Salt was actually shipped out of the Port Hedland Port long before iron ore. Providing local jobs is a priority with 95% of the Hedland workforce residential.
The team toured the laboratory operated by the awesome team of local Hedland ladies, saw salt being harvested , washed and even walked out onto a salt pond and visited the “pickling pond”
Salt is a raw material and in industrial use helps make chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash, all of which are used in processing and manufacturing of other products, including: PVC and polyutherane, Glass ,Detergents and soap, textiles, Industrial chemicals and Road de-icing.
