Business Community Information Session

In January the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce held an information session for the business community at the WEB Business Hub, which was attended by Councillor’s Flo Bennett and David Eckhart. Attendees heard from guest speakers Craig Watts, Director of Regulatory Services Town of Port Hedland, Senior Sgt Gordon Armstrong and Senior Sgt Steve Cleal from the South Hedland Police.

Craig provided an update on the Community Patrol Program and how this has assisted in helping our local police officers by having more eyes on the ground. This program has been a welcomed addition to the local officers who have been managing their fatigue levels during the increase in crime over the past few months. Although this was an initial six week program funded by the Town of Port Hedland, the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce hope to see this become a regular initiative for our businesses and residents.

Senior Sgt Gordon and Steve spoke to the group about how their officers have been working hard with the high number of youth crimes that have been committed over the past few months. They asked for help from the local community to keep their keys hidden and vehicles and houses locked, as the break-ins and ram raids that have been happening are opportunistic crimes.

There were a number of questions posed by local businesses who attended, which the police were able to answer. We may look at hosting another information session in the future inviting along other key stakeholders to present to our members and the business community.

The Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Senior Sgt Gordon Armstrong, Senior Sgt Steve Cleal and Craig Watts Director of Regulatory Services for taking the time out of their busy schedules for this information session.

As advised by the South Hedland Police, please remember to stay vigilant, keep your keys out of sight, lock your vehicles and lock your doors.
